There are things that matter to you. Some of those things matter to you because you think they matter to God. If you stopped worrying about what mattered to God, what would be left that mattered to you?
Those would be the only things that matter.
And those things change over time. You don’t cling to things so hard when
you don’t think they matter to God.
You have no way to know what matters to God. All you can know is what
matters to you.
Job 42:5-6
I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth
thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.
God looks very different once you realize that everything you are doing for
God is wasted effort. You can’t do anything for God. You’re like a little kid
making mud pies for your Mom. And the moment you realize that, you feel kind of
small and insignificant.
Your political causes – they don’t matter to God. Your religious observances
– they don’t matter to God. Pursue them if you want, but just realize it’s what
you want, not what God wants.
Maybe, if you can see that, you will see God, and then the things that don’t
matter, won’t matter.
