If you're still clinging to the Bible as the inspired word of God, you don't know the truth, and you aren't free. The first step is to let go. Let go of everything you thought you knew about God. About sin. About prayer. About how the world works. You need to relearn it all.
Freedom is scary. Letting go is disorienting.
Janis Ian - “From Me to You”:
Your beliefs join you to a community, to others who share your views. But when life bids you follow a different path, when what you believe conflicts with where your heart is taking you, you must choose between clinging to what you know or reaching for what you can become. If that challenges those around you, their fears can motivate them to resist the changes evolving inside you. You may wind up leaving behind old friends, routines, and activities, before new ones are formed. The transition from old to new can cause you to feel disconnected from everything that is familiar. It passes in time.
Manfred Mann - “Questions”:
And if you do choose to embark on a new path, if you allow your old beliefs to be challenged, you will find yourself limited by your old perceptions of reality. You need new ways of interpreting the things in life that happen to you, so you can make decisions about where to go and what to do. But the processes you relied on just give you the same old answers, and you've probably lost confidence in some of the people you trusted to help you make choices. It can be paralyzing. You may feel you are stumbling around in the dark, and that you just want to go back to the way things were. Whether to push through the confusion or give up and go back just depends on how much the truth really means to you. Milk or Solid Food - the choice is yours.
Dan Fogelberg - “ Part of the Plan ”
And while you may be pursuing your heart's leadings, and your path might start to feel new and exciting, there is a high probability that someone you care a lot about will feel like they lost you, or you will feel like you lost them. You will almost surely at some point feel guilt or pain or loss at the connections that are broken. It can be a high emotional cost. But, when your heart moves, the only higher cost is not moving with it.
Black and white become gray, there’s no right or wrong.
The search for God becomes an exercise in figuring out what you want.
The certainty of salvation and immortality gives way to questions about everything.
